Hannah Scott (nee Cuming) was the daughter of William Bennett Cuming of Plymouth, a Lloyd's surveyor. She married John Scott, a brewer, in 1861 and had four daughters - Etttie, Rose, Grace and Katherine - and two sons, Robert Falcon (born in 1868) and Archie. The family lived at Outlands, near Devonport. After the brewery was sold, the family had to lease Outlands. The capital from the sale was soon reduced to almost nothing. Arthur Foley Winnington-Ingram was born in 1858 at Stanford-on-Teme, Worcestershire. He was educated at Marlborough College and Keble College, Oxford, and on graduating in 1881, travelled for three years as a private tutor. In 1884, he was ordained deacon and priest, and the following year was appointed domestic chaplain to the bishop of Lichfield.
